If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Space planning is key when it comes to a kitchen renovation. Here are my top 3 things to remember when designing the layout of your kitchen.
The second mistake I see people make is that they just can’t wait to pick out paint colors before they have selected cabinets or countertops. DON’T do this!!! Please, I beg you.
Paint is the easiest thing to select. Finding a countertop that matches the undertone of the white you chose is very difficult. Finding a paint that compliments your counter top, easy.
If you are planning on painting your cabinets, pick out the counter top first. I know this seems counterintuitive to most people but trust me, you will save yourself a lot of headache if you do it in this order.
Also, if you are planning on doing an all white kitchen you need to be aware that there are 9 undertones in the color white. Nine. That’s a lot. Maria Killam’s blog is my go to resource for all things color.
Just keep in mind when you are choosing white you want to make sure that you are not mixing a yellow undertone with a pink undertone. It will look dirty and it will drive you nuts trying to figure out what’s wrong!
One trick you can use to figure out the undertone of the cabinets or countertop you are selecting is to put a piece of white printer paper behind it. White printer paper is a true white and whatever you hold in front of it will let you see what the undertone is. I do this when selecting backsplash in an existing kitchen as well. That way the object isn’t picking up any of the tones from the paint or other surfaces it’s next to.
What’s the biggest thing homeowners complain about during a renovation is? Did you guess the vent hood? I know, not what you were expecting me to say! Let me explain.
Some companies make their vent hoods that border on commercial grade suction power. Without getting all sciency on you, the hood sucks out air (negative pressure) at a greater rate that good air (positive pressure) can be replaced. This makes the indoor air quality in your home worse, not better.
So what do you need to be aware of? Here are my top things to consider when looking for a vent hood:
I hope these tips help you to consider some things you may not of been thinking of! Designing a kitchen, or any renovation project for that matter, is filled with tons of decisions that have to be made.
Any changes that are made can sometimes have a snowball effect with unintended consequences. Not trying to scare you-just trying to make you aware. A good plan will help save you time and money later on. Of course, there will be issues, because that’s life but with a good plan in place you should be able to mitigate many of the issues that come up during a renovation!
Let me know if you have made any kitchen renovation mistakes. I also love hearing your suggestions for future blog post!
