Choosing a rug for your house doesn't have to be complicated. Think of it as finding the perfect pair of jeans that actually fit -only much easier!! There are 3 things to consider when choosing a rug for your home.
At least with area rugs, they are the focal point in the space. They tie the whole design together as well as help define the space, especially in today's open floor plans. You want to make sure that the rug is large enough for the space. More often than not, people choose a rug that is too sm
all. The rug should fit underneath at least the front legs of the furniture it's sitting under. You want to try and leave a 1-2 foot space between the edge of the rug and the wall. If the rug is going under a dining table, it needs to be big enough to scoot the chair in and out without catching the edge of the rug. Below are some examples of rugs that fit and why.
Also keep in mind that it's a good idea to keep the rug on an even surface. This will help with wear and tear. You'll also want to put a rug pad underneath the rug, even if heavy furniture is going to sit on top of it. This just helps keep it in place. Finally, direct sunlight can fade your rug, so if the room gets direct light, try to keep the sunlight off it during the hottest part of the day.
A note on measuring: you can use room planners (like Icovia) that are free. This program allows you to draw our your room, add in your furniture and then add a rug to see what size you will need. You can also just get some painters tape and mark it out on the floor and then measure! Whatever works best for you.
