There’s a lot of home renovation/DIY projects going on out there and that’s fine if you know what you’re doing. However, if you’ve just hired a general contractor to come in and do your kitchen or bathroom remodel, most of the time they are looking to do what is cheapest and easiest for them. Not necessarily what will function best for you and your family. (That’s not to say there aren’t good contractors out there-I’m just saying be careful!)
So how do you protect yourself and this major investment you’re about to make into your home? You hire an interior designer who gets you. Who’s easy to work with. Who takes the time to listen to your needs and figure out what would work best for you.
I’m just going to get the obvious out of the way before we dive into some reasons you might not have thought of for why you need to hire a designer. Hiring an interior designer will save you time and money. We are going to notice things that don’t look right or need to be changed before the renovation has taken place. We are going to keep you from making costly mistakes. By presenting you with a complete design plan before renovation begins helps to cut down on change orders that can be costly and time consuming.
Without further ado, 5 reasons why you should hire an interior designer.
Whether you are adding an addition on, renovating a kitchen, or furnishing a living room, talking to a professional who does this all day everyday is a must.
Even if you aren’t looking for a full service design experience, hiring a designer to come out for a consultation to make sure you are headed in the right direction is worth it. I can usually walk into a space and know right away how to fix it or offer advice on what layout you should do for furniture.
Most of my clients hire me because they don’t know what they are doing and are okay with hiring a professional to do it for them. I’m not trying to perform surgery on myself or even change my own tires. I hire a professional. You should too.
Designers have access to trade only vendors that provide better quality products. There’s a reason why the tile at big box stores is so cheap. You don’t want to spend all this money on a kitchen renovation only to have to replace the floors in 3 years because the tile is cracking.
If you’re looking to update your furniture, I am going to be able to craft a design that is unique to you. It’s going to let your personality shine through while meeting the demands of your lifestyle!
We also know who the good local trades people are. I work with a team of individuals that meet my quality and customer service standards. Need custom cabinets or looking for a countertop that will also make a statement as a backsplash, no problem.
As a designer, I am going to be able to come up with ideas that you wouldn’t have thought of. I can “see” how the space is going to look, and then I know how to communicate that to you so you can also see it.
A designer is going to spend time asking specific questions to get to know you better and really learn what makes you excited.
I’m also good at being part marriage counselor! He likes modern and she likes coastal and most couples have no idea how to blend the two. A designer is going to be able to take elements from both design genres and create a beautiful, cohesive design plan.
What do you mean I’m going to get more sleep??? There are so many little decisions that go into a designer project. Are the outlets in the correct spot? What kind of lighting do I need in here? Is this tile rated for bathroom floors. I could go on.
At MLR Design, we have a proven process that we use for every project to help ensure no detail goes unnoticed! Therefore, you don’t have to worry about it. Less stress equals more sleep for you!
I saved this one for last because most people don’t think about this. When you are taking on a project, especially a major renovation, and you aren’t a trained professional, it can be intimidating talking to contractors and architects. If you aren’t familiar with the lingo you may not know what they’re even talking about!
Oftentimes homeowners get pushed into doing something because it’s easiest for the contractor but it really isn’t something they want. A designer is going to act as your middle man. I am going to stand up for you and what you want. I also know the right questions to ask and can help solve problems when issues arise.
I will essentially become your designer bestie and go to bat for you every time :)
